Piano Holiday Decorating

Eddie recently surprised me by bringing home a piano he found sitting on the side of the road in our neighborhood (he somehow got it on his two skateboards and rolled it to our house by himself - best surprise EVER). We’ve been spending time over the past few weeks fixing it up and it’s been such a fulfilling project. Judging by the amount of dirt/dust we found inside and out (and how out of tune it was!) we think it’s been sitting in someone’s garage for decades. But we cleaned it up, disinfected it, hired movers to carry it up and down the stairs into our house, had it tuned, and have been giving it a lot of love.

I grew up playing piano. I started taking lessons when I was 4 or 5 years old, and continued until I graduated high school. Piano was a big part of my life - classes every week for 12 years, practicing at home almost every day, music camps, recitals, etc. My grandmother was a big piano lover, and I have a lot of sweet memories playing for her whenever we saw each other. The holidays especially were a time when our family gathered around the piano for mini recitals. No matter whose house we were celebrating at, there was always a piano nearby for me, my siblings, or cousins to plop down and play for the family. Whether it was Christmas songs, pieces we were working on, or classics we had in our repertoire, the holidays were always filled with piano playing.

I won’t be able to spend the holidays with family in New York this year, but I’m so thankful to have a piano again to reminisce and reconnect with my childhood traditions. I’m looking forward to playing Christmas songs, and may even have to video chat with my family for a virtual sing-a-long. Ha! I decorated the piano all nice and festive to celebrate this time too, and had so much fun playing around with the styling. Wanted to share with you a few of the Target pieces I chose to give this corner of the living room a cozy feel!

The easiest way to decorate a piano for the holidays is to lay a garland over it. I didn’t want to create a mess or risk greenery falling onto the keys, so I opted for a very convincing faux Cypress and Red Berry Garland. It’s the perfect length to drape on top of our Kimball Spinet, and I love the little pinecone accents. So sweet!

If you’ve been following along with me for a while, you know I’m a big candle lover. They’re always my top choice for instantly creating a cozy feel at home - the flickering flame and beautiful scents, there’s nothing better! This Holiday Balsam candle has a wonderful spiced kick to it, and the dark green frosted glass jar is so lovely. As is this Holiday Spruce candle. The perfect tree scent, when Eddie walked into the room for the first time after I lit these he said, “It smells like Christmas in here!” Mission accomplished.

I snagged this Holiday Spruce candle in two sizes - 15.1 oz and 4.1 oz. I love playing with different sized candles when styling a space.

Our piano didn’t come with a matching bench, so we had been using one of our extra dining chairs while we looked for one. When I saw this gorge Faux Fur Hairpin Bench, I just knew it would be a fab addition to the space. Since the piano is a darker wood and obviously a very traditional style, I love the idea of pairing it with glamorous seating for a fun juxtaposition. It brightens up the corner and makes a statement - the winter white faux fur and gold-finish legs also give it a fun holiday feel. Plus, it’s super comfy!

I fell in love with these darling Tinsel Christmas Tree Figurines, so I bought a bunch to sprinkle around the room in three different sizes - 12 inch, 15 inch, and 18 inch. Their branches are covered in a glittery snow that sparkles when the light hits them, and their little round wooden bases are just so sweet.

Add quartz crystals, a few tapered candlesticks, light some incense, and you’ve got a cozy holiday piano scene. Now we just have to figure out where to place the Christmas tree this year!
